Motivate Me

If you think about anyone who has achieved greatness in their field - J.K. Rowling, Lance Armstrong, Barack Obama, Layne Beachley etc - you can be sure that they constantly struggled with obstacles along the way. Sitting the HSC isn't everything, but it is an opportunity to step up to a challenge and show yourself that you're ready to take on life!

So how do you get motivated to do well well in the HSC?

The most important thing is consistency. Not even professional athletes or brain surgeons can remain focussed 100% of the time. Think of your HSC campaign as an expedition to the summit of Mt HSC. A bit lame? Probably, but it works.

Students who work too hard in the early stages are likely to burn themselves out, while those who procrastinate and avoid preparing now, will struggle during the more stressful climbs ahead.

Some quick tips for your 2009 assault on Mt HSC

  • Avoid procrastination. The time to start preparing is now, not tomorrow!

  • Set goals. What is at the top of your Mt HSC? A UAI of 87.5%? Entry into Vet Science at Sydney University? Tell those who care about you about your goals, and constantly remind yourself why you're studying and working hard. Break your larger goals up into bite-sized chunks that are easy to focus on in the short-term: ‘In my next maths assessment, I want to get over 80%'

  • Never ever give up! Learning to deal with set backs is what the HSC is all about. If you get knocked over, get up and keep hiking! You are usually closer to a breakthrough than you think - the more obstacles you overcome, the stronger you will be.
